Right then, that is it from this game as Mumbai wins this by 42 runs. The next game of the Women's T20 League will be played between Delhi and UP on 8th March at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT). Join us an hour early for the pre-match build-up. Until then, cheers!
Natalie Sciver-Brunt is the player of the match and she says she is happy with the performance as they wanted to bounce back from the last game and they did that well. Adds they knew the surface had a bit of hold and grip and 160 is what they had planned. Mentions that she likes playing on the back foot and she used that to a good use today. Closes by saying that change-ups worked on this track and she feels happy to have contributed in many ways to the side.
Harmanpreet Kaur, the skipper of Mumbai says that she is happy with the result. She reckons that they were 20 runs short but managed things well. She continues that her partnership with Natalie Sciver-Brunt was important and later praised her strokeplay. She states that she discussed with the bowlers and suggested them to keep changing the pace and lengths on this pitch and ultimately got the result. Ends up praising Saika Ishaque for her incredible efforts.
The losing skipper of UP Alyssa Healy says that Mumbai bowled well since the beginning. She continues that their bowlers also bowled pretty well and have worked hard but she feels like this loss is on the batters. She also states that the conditions were a bit tricky. She ends up hoping her top order does well in the coming games and supports Deepti Sharma as she has been scoring well in the middle.
Stay tuned for the presentation...
Saika Ishaque is up for a quick chat and says she just planned to bowl full at the batters of UP and it worked. Mentions that she just wanted to bowl a yorker to Kiran Navgire after being hit for a maximum and she executed it perfectly and that got her the wicket of Kiran Navgire. Adds that the score was a fighting one and the bowlers did well.
Earlier in the game, after electing to bat first, Mumbai did not start well and lost their openers in the powerplay. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and Natalie Sciver-Brunt then knitted a solid third-wicket partnership of 59 runs and stabled the side. There were crisp partnerships for the 4th and 5th wicket as well but it was a brilliant end to the innings from Amelia Kerr and Sajeevan Sajana who scored 43 runs together for the 6th wicket that helped the side post 160 on board. The bowling from UP was decent with Chamari Athapaththu scalping a couple while Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Deepti Sharma and Saima Thakor picked up one each.
The bowlers of Mumbai bowled tremendously and broke the backbone of the chase early on in the powerplay itself. The bowlers did not ease off and kept taking wickets regularly. Saika Ishaque took three wickets while Natalie Sciver-Brunt took a couple. Rest all barring Amelia Kerr and Amanjot Kaur took a wicket each as well. It was a day that could be termed as a skipper's delight in terms of performance in all the departments of the game by her players.
Chasing down a fighting total, UP got off to the worst possible start and lost three in the powerplay managing to score just 17 runs off it. Alyssa Healy, Kiran Navgire and Chamari Athapaththu couldn't get off the blocks and the bowlers of Mumbai were all over them. Grace Harris had been batting brilliantly this season but she struggled big time today and managed to hit only 15 off the 23 deliveries. The innings of UP never got going and they were soon chasing shadows. Deepti Sharma was the top scorer for UP as she scored 53 in a losing cause. No other significant performance came from any of their batters.
A brilliant all-round performance from Mumbai sees them get past UP in some style as they win this by 42 runs.
