With the conclusion of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, the two-year term tenure of Rahul Dravid as Team India’s Head Coach also came to an end. While Rahul has full freedom to decide on his future as the team’s coach, speculations suggest that VVS Laxman will be appointed as the new coach if Rahul chooses to resign from the position. To be noted, Laxman is currently coaching the Indian team in the ongoing bilateral T20I series against Australia.
Rejection of proposal by Ashish Nehra
For a long time, reports suggested that Indian pacer Ashish Nehra, known for his subtle variations of line and length was approached by BCCI with an offer to coach Team India in the T20 format, mainly after the end of Rahul Dravid’s tenure. The ability of Nehra to coach young players is exceptional as it was evident at the time when Nehra turned as a bowling coach for the Gujarat Titans in the IPL and showcased his extraordinary leadership skills.
However, it seems that the senior pacer is not interested in coaching Team India due to a number of reasons. Nehra’s personal priorities and commitments stands one of the main reasons which led him to reject the offer. Also, he is doing well with coaching an IPL franchise team for which he has already gained a lot of recognition and his career as a commentator seems to obstruct his path to become a coach.
Dravid provided with an extension
Amidst all these developments, the BCCI provided Rahul Dravid with an offer to continue in his position and extend his term as the team’s Head Coach. While Rahul has not made an official statement in this regard, if he agrees to the contract, he will certainly continue with his position and work with the same set of teams he has been working with since 2021. Rahul Dravid was appointed as Team India’s Head Coach after Ravi Shastri‘s tenure in 2021.
