After a break, Australia is facing Pakistan in a test series. Australia is in a great form. They ended the World Cup 2023 campaign as the winner. They won the World Cup trophy for the sixth time. In this test match against Pakistan, Australia is in a great rhythm. Aussie opener David Warner is playing the last test series of his career. Mitchell Marsh refused to open the innings in the longest format of cricket after Warner’s retirement.

Marsh’s Refusal:

Australia and Pakistan are facing each other in the first test match in Perth. This is going to be the last test series of David Warner’s career. After the World Test Championship, David Warner announced his retirement. He informed that he will be retiring from the longest format of cricket after the third test match against Pakistan in January 2024 at the Sydney Cricket Ground. 

David Warner opens the innings for Australia. After his retirement, Australia will require an opener. With this thought, Mitchell Marsh was approached to open the innings. But he declined the proposal of being the opener in the longest format of cricket. He said, “But I’ve worked really hard to get back in this side and for me to look forward to having a role as an opener just doesn’t make sense to me.”

He added, “I love being at number six, and in my last four Test matches, I’ve really found my way and I guess who I am as Test cricketer and I’m loving it, So I’m reluctant to change that.” 

On the number six position, he said, “I think I showed glimpses of the way I played in the last 12 months throughout my career, but probably never really believed in that method. I tried to play the long innings and play like Steve Smith and Davey and Uzzy and all those guys who can bat for six hours.”

Later he said, “I can put pressure back onto teams and the beauty of batting at six is if we bat well, you get some tired bowlers to try to counterattack and keep the game moving. Hopefully, I can stay nice and consistent.”

Mitchell Marsh Against Pakistan:

In the first test against Pakistan, Australia is in great form. In the first innings, they played effortlessly. All the players contributed to putting on a massive score on board. In the first innings, while batting at number 6, Mitchell Marsh played an aggressive innings of 90 runs in 107 balls. He smashed 15 boundaries and 1 over-boundaries. He made a 90-run partnership with Alex Carey. 

Australia is still dominating the first test match. In the first innings, they put on a massive total of 487 runs on the board. Pakistan struggled while batting. The Aussie bowlers showed their excellence. Pakistan got all-out on 271 runs. Australia faced disappointments in the second innings. They lost two early wickets in the beginning. At the end of day three, Australia is 84/2.
