Australia‘s fast bowlers Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc, who have had a lighter workload than expected during the Test summer, could be available for selection in one or both of the upcoming T20I series against West Indies and New Zealand. The selectors are considering this option as the bowlers have managed their workloads well so far in the Test matches, with none of the games extending to a fifth day.
Although initially, it seemed likely that the trio would be rested for the T20Is against West Indies, their current fitness levels and workload management may allow them to participate in the T20I series, with the selectors meeting soon to finalize the squads for these series.
The selectors are also considering the workload management of Cummins and Starc, who are expected to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as significant signings. As a result, they may be rested for the West Indies series but could feature in the New Zealand series. Hazlewood, on the other hand, is not expected to play in the IPL unless there is an opportunity as a replacement player, making him a likely candidate to play both T20I series.
In addition to the fast bowlers, David Warner is set to be selected for both the West Indies and New Zealand T20Is and will return from the Indian League T20 (ILT20) by February 7 to prepare for the T20I series in Hobart. Tim David, who has signed with MI Emirates, and Marcus Stoinis, currently at the SA20 with Durban’s Super Giants, may also return home early if selected for the national team.
Australia’s coaching staff will also see some changes, with Robin Singh taking over as the Head Coach, Ajay Jadeja as the batting coach, and Mitchell McClenaghan as the bowling coach. McDonald will not coach the ODI and T20I series against West Indies to spend extra time at home before the New Zealand tour, with assistant coach Daniel Vettori taking over for those series.
Overall, Australia is looking to balance player workloads and prepare a competitive squad for the upcoming T20I series ahead of the T20 World Cup in June.
