The much-anticipated ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup is all set to commence on October 5, with India hosting this edition of the World Cup after 12 years. Last time India acted as the host country, it bagged the trophy under the captaincy of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. This year also, fans are expecting India to win the World Cup, provided their home ground conditions, but it is important to note that all the teams are coming back stronger, with outstanding players displaying dominant batting prowess and bowling spells.

Ahead of the marquee event, senior players and experts have started pitching in their predictions on which team could make it to the finals. Among the 10 teams geared up for the big tournament, two of them continue to remain everyone’s favourites and are likely to win this year’s World Cup.

Can South Africa stand a chance?

South Africa’s former star pacer Dale Steyn expressed that he badly wants to see South Africa make it to the finals, as it is a known fact that South African players are familiar with Indian pitches owing to the matches; some of their players played in the IPL. It undoubtedly gives South Africa a golden chance to be aware of Indian conditions.

Steyn told Star Sports that “it’s a tough one; you know my heart wants to go for South Africa making the final. I would love them to make the final; their team, a lot of their players play in the IPL; they play in India regularly; and they have some guys like David Miller and Heinrich Klassen who really started to figure out those conditions and bat well there. “Then there is KG Rabada, who has been bowling there for ages.

Steyn further expressed the possibility of India winning the World Cup. He acknowledged this prediction by saying, “My heart wants to say South Africa and India, but I am kind of leaning towards India and England.”

Weighing on the same predictions

On the other side, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan weighed in on the same predictions and showed his concern over England. He claimed that England has some of the best all-rounders, and in such conditions, it is difficult to beat them. However, the former pacer backed the same teams as Dale Steyn, saying that “on logic, you can’t drop England from the finalists’ spot because they have a very strong team.” “For me, it’s India and South Africa.”

The final match of the World Cup will be played on November 19 at the world’s largest cricket stadium, Narendra Modi Stadium, located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
