Right then, that is all we have from this absolute run-fest. The action in the Big Bash League continues on 6th January, Friday where Melbourne Stars will take on Sydney Sixers at the MCG. The first ball will be bowled at 1 pm IST (7.30 am GMT). Do join us early for the build-up of both these games. Until then, goodbye and cheers!
Matthew Short is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his brilliant match-winning century.
Earlier, in the innings, after being asked to bat first, Hobart Hurricanes posted a mammoth total of 229 runs thanks to half-centuries from Ben McDermott, Caleb Jewell and Zak Crawley. Tim David also played a quick-fire knock. They would have been confident of defending this down, but Matthew Short had other ideas and with his blistering hundred took his side over the line along with a half-century from Chris Lynn and crucial contribution form Adam Hose. They avenged their previous loss and created history here. Stay tuned to see who is the player of the match.
Hobart Hurricanes will be disappointed with their bowling effort here. The pitch did help the batters more, but their bowlers also did not hit the right line and lengths and gave away too many loose deliveries. They did manage to get the early breakthrough, but then let the game slip away from them for a while. However, in the Power Surge they got rid of the dangerous Chris Lynn and cut down the flow of the runs for a bit. Patrick Dooley was the pick of the bowlers with his two wickets and an economical spell. Tim David got the other wicket. After, that they once again let momentum shift towards the Strikers. There was also a controversial moment when Adam Hose was a caught in the deep, but the third umpire gave it as a no ball for above waist height full toss. The game changed after that and they just could not stop Matthew Short who finished the chase with three balls to spare. Faheem Ashraf had a game to forget as he conceded 61 runs in his 3.3 overs, and Hobart Hurricanes will need to buckle up and do well in thier next games.
Adelaide Strikers did not get off to a good start to their chase as they lost Ryan Gibson quite early and Matthew Short was also struggling to get going. Chris Lynn came in at number 3 and changed the entire momentum by taking on every bowler. This also helped Short to get his act together and both of them smashed it all around the park. They were at 111/1 at the halfway mark and took the Power Surge right after the drinks break which proved to be the end of a fine innings from Lynn. Both of them added 124 runs to the total which is also the highest partnership for any wicket this season and included fifties from both. However, the Surge stopped the flow of the runs a bit, but Short along with Adam Hose tried to keep up with the required rate. And boy they did that, with some excellent batting display and also some help from the Hobart Hurricanes bowlers. In the end they needed 4 runs in 4 balls, and Matthew Short smashed it for boundary to hit the winning runs and registered his hundred as well. This effort will be remembered for a long, long time.
Take a bow, Matthew Short! He scored his maiden BBL hundred and played a captain's inning to take his side over the line. Adelaide Strikers wins this run fest and records the highest ever run-chase in the history of BBL. Hobart Hurricanes will need some time to recover from this defeat.
