In a candid interview on the Australian TV show, The Front Bar, cricketer Nathan Lyon took a direct shot at England‘s Test side, expressing strong disapproval of their playing style, known as Bazball. Seated behind a bar, Lyon didn’t hold back, labeling Bazball as “a load of s***”.

Responding to questions from hosts in front of him, Lyon shared his views on Bazball: “Well, I’m 2-0 against Bazball, so I’m pretty happy about it.” However, his sentiments quickly turned critical as he continued, “To me, it’s a load of s*** if you ask me. It’s a brand of cricket that the English want to keep going, now it’s in the dictionary, which is pretty remarkable.”

The term “Bazball” was recently added to the Collins dictionary, defined as “a style of test cricket in which the batting side attempts to gain the initiative by playing in a highly aggressive manner.” Coined by ESPNCricinfo journalist Andrew Miller, the term emerged in response to England’s aggressive play under coach Brendon McCullum.

The 2023 Ashes series witnessed intense debates surrounding Bazball, ultimately concluding in a 2-2 draw, with Australia retaining the urn. Lyon, who played in the first two Tests that Australia won, faced an unfortunate setback, sustaining a calf injury during the Lord’s Test, forcing him out for the series’s remainder.

Despite Lyon’s absence, England managed to win the third and fifth Tests, leveling the series. Lyon, who had taken nine wickets in the three innings he bowled during the series, didn’t shy away from expressing his disapproval of Bazball.

Other Australian players, including Marnus Labuschagne, echoed Lyon’s sentiments, criticizing the inclusion of Bazball in the dictionary. Lyon emphasized, “I did not see Bazball” during the two Ashes Tests he participated in. These ongoing discussions underscore the contrasting opinions surrounding England’s aggressive cricketing approach and its reception within the broader cricketing community.
