New York is set to play host to three India games in the upcoming T20 World Cup, while Dallas, the other hosting center in the USA, will not host any India games. The decision has sparked discussions about the reasons behind this allocation.
The Nassau County International Stadium in New York, where the India–Pakistan match is scheduled to take place, is set to be unveiled soon. The stadium, though temporary, is designed to be one of the most modern cricket stadiums in the world, with a capacity of 34,000 seats. It is a priority project for the ICC and is expected to commence construction shortly.
The ICC has assigned three India games to New York – against Ireland on June 5, against Pakistan on June 9, and against the USA on June 12. However, Dallas, which has a permanent stadium with a capacity of about 7,500, has missed out on hosting an India game.
The decision has sparked disappointment among the cricket community in Dallas, especially among the Dallas Super Kings, an affiliate of the IPL’s Chennai Super Kings. Kasi Viswanathan, who manages the Dallas Super Kings, expressed disappointment at the decision, stating that if the ICC wants to promote cricket in the US, they should have allotted an India game to Dallas.
However, the ICC has cited logistical and operational plchallenges for not considering Dallas as a venue for India games. These challenges include the time zone difference, capacity constraints, and logistical issues with direct flights to the Caribbean, the second hosting country for the tournament.
Despite missing out on India games, Dallas has been given the honor of launching the T20 World Cup on June 1 with a game between the USA and Canada. The city has also been allotted three more games in the tournament.
In response to the allocation, Vijay Srinivasan, co-founder of Major League Cricket (MLC), expressed delight at hosting the opening match of the T20 World Cup at the Grand Prairie Cricket Stadium in North Texas. He highlighted the historical rivalry between the USA and Canada and expressed excitement about welcoming fans from various countries to Texas for the tournament.
The allocation of games for the T20 World Cup reflects the ICC’s efforts to balance logistical considerations with the promotion of cricket in the USA, as the country gears up to host a major international cricket event.
