Young English Bowler Rehan Ahmed expresses his ambition to remain prepared for potential selection by England across all formats this summer. However, he acknowledges that, initially, his priority at Leicestershire may need to shift towards honing his batting skills, recognizing that his leg spin may not yet be fully effective early in the season.

Rehan’s Words:

England’s young leg-spinner, Rehan Ahmed, shifts his focus to performing admirably for Leicestershire in the upcoming County Championship, rather than eyeing a potential Test debut. Ahmed made headlines in 2022 during England’s Test series against Pakistan, where he secured a five-wicket haul on debut, becoming the youngest Englishman to do so. With an eye on the future, Ahmed emphasizes his commitment to improving his batting and bowling for his county team.

He said, “I’m not really fussed about what I’m trying to achieve this year. I’ve tried to do as much as I can within myself. So whether that’s me getting my overs in, me getting as many runs as I can because I love my batting and I’ve underperformed. I want to bat better.”

Difficulties and Commitment to County”

The 19-year-old acknowledged the challenges brought by early-season conditions in England, particularly for spinners. He emphasized the need to adapt his game and capitalize on chances to bowl, both in matches and during training, recognizing the importance of honing his skills despite the hurdles posed by the conditions.

He said, “Bowling in matches is something I’ve lacked a bit. I’ve bowled a lot in white-ball, not heaps of overs in red-ball plus it’s April, going to be nipping round corners. I’ll be bowling loads in training.”

Although England has significant upcoming events like the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and home Test series against the West Indies and Sri Lanka, Ahmed remains dedicated to county cricket. He prioritizes his commitment to his county team, focusing on honing his skills and contributing to their success.

He said, “I’ll be playing county cricket straight away. Leicester comes first when I’m not playing for England.”
