In an innovative initiative introduced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the ‘Dressing Room Medal’ is awarded to standout fielders in the Indian cricket team during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Following in the footsteps of Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, Shreyas Iyer emerged as the latest recipient of this prestigious award.

The ‘Dressing Room Medal’ Race: A Humorous Twist

The quest for the ‘Dressing Room Medal’ saw stiff competition during India’s encounter with New Zealand at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala. Three notable contenders emerged for this distinctive accolade: Mohammed Siraj, the fast bowler who left a lasting impression with his ground fielding skills, navigating the challenging Dharamsala outfield with exceptional finesse.

Virat Kohli, India’s stalwart batter added to his fielding exploits by taking a couple of remarkable catches during the game. And Shreyas Iyer, whose claim to the award began with a sensational catch at square-leg to dismiss New Zealand opener Devon Conway for a duck. His astonishing reflexes left both teammates and fans on the edge of their seats.

A Unique Award Presentation

To announce the recipient of the award, the BCCI introduced a touch of innovation. Utilizing the ‘Spider Cam,’ the entire Indian cricket team was summoned to the outfield after the match. As the ‘Spider Cam’ descended towards the boundary’s edge, the moment was set for the big reveal.

The excitement was palpable as it was unveiled that Shreyas Iyer would be the deserving winner of the ‘Dressing Room Medal.’ Iyer’s diving catch at square leg had not only secured a crucial wicket but also evoked admiration and cheers from his teammates and supporters.

A Playful Request for Recognition

However, the enchanting moment took a humorous turn when Iyer, following the completion of the catch, cheekily gestured towards his fellow teammates and the Indian dugout. In a light-hearted request, he playfully sought the coveted ‘Best Fielder’ Medal.

The ‘Best Fielder’ Medal is an exceptional facet of the Indian team’s endeavour to acknowledge and celebrate exceptional fielding efforts throughout the World Cup. Responding to Shreyas Iyer’s delightful appeal, the BCCI duly presented him with the well-deserved award.
