As the eagerly awaited Asia Cup 2023 approaches, Sri Lanka has been dealt a challenging blow with key players succumbing to injuries. The 15-member squad named by Sri Lanka reveals the absence of crucial bowlers, posing a significant setback to their campaign in the tournament.

One of the notable absentees is leg-spinning all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga, who has been a pivotal asset to the team’s performance. Alongside him, pacers Dushmantha Chameera, Lahiru Madushanka, and Lahiru Kumara are also sidelined due to injuries. In a bid to fill the void left by these injuries, late inclusions Binura Fernando and Pramod Madushan have been introduced into the squad.

Kusal Perera‘s return to the ODI squad after a two-year hiatus is also met with a hurdle, as he is currently recovering from flu. The Sri Lankan Cricket Board has indicated that he will join the squad once he recovers from the illness.

Wanindu Hasaranga’s absence stems from a thigh strain he suffered during the Lanka Premier League, where he excelled as both a top run-scorer and the highest wicket-taker. His prowess with both bat and ball will undoubtedly be missed by the team.

Dushmantha Chameera‘s unavailability is attributed to a pectoral injury, Lahiru Madushanka suffered an injury during a practice match, and Lahiru Kumara grapples with a side strain.

Sri Lanka’s opening match in the Asia Cup is scheduled against Bangladesh on August 31 in Pallekele. The team’s captain, Dasun Shanaka, along with other core members like Kusal Janith Perera and Kusal Mendis, will have to step up to lead the squad in the absence of key players.

Sri Lanka’s prospects in the tournament are now overshadowed by these injuries. However, cricket is known for its unpredictability, and the team’s resilience and adaptability will be put to the test as they strive to make their mark in the Asia Cup 2023.
